Out of the Frying Pan

Whether you're a utensil minimalist or a gadget pig, there are always a few kitchen tools you can't live without. We'll start with our respective favorites and keep adding until you can find even those once-a-year essentials.

Our favorites Specialty gadgets and workhorses we use day in, day out:

Charcoal Chimney Come on, baby, light my fire. And forget the starter fluid!

Citrus Zester The citrus skin, I discovered, contains concentrated oil that is remarkably flavorful, as well as very colorful. I was onboard with the citrus zester.

Oil Can I keep two oil cans out near my stove--one with peanut oil, and one with olive oil.

Lemon Reamer It's not as dirty as it sounds. It is, in fact, a fabulous citrus juice extractor.

Pepper Grinder My favorite line from Alice in Wonderland and my battle cry in the kitchen are one in the same: MORE PEPPER!

Silicone spatulas I use them for everything from batter to stir-fry to lifting crepes. Of my obnoxious collection of utensils shown above, this is one of the few I used absolutely every day.

Tongs When it comes to tongs, their quality's not important--simply having them's the thing.

Zyliss garlic press I can squeeze even a hearty clove of Elephant garlic using just three fingers of my right hand, and best of all--the clove doesn't even have to be peeled.
