We left Austin Thursday afternoon with visions of crawfish
dancing in our heads. And the Breaux Bridge Crawfish Festival
was well worth the seven-hour drive. Many attendees make a
double weekend of the Crawfish Festival and Jazz Fest (New
Orleans is just a 2 hour drive), but we decided to stick with
crawfish.
And
we were glad we did. Not only did we eat our fill of mudbugs,
we got some wonderful recipes, learned Fais do-do, sampled
étouffée, listened to plenty of great Cajun
music, and played at the carnival. And it was cheap, to boot.
The whole event was only 10 bucks for all three days, and
(unlike at most festivals) the refreshments were completely
reasonableno Disneyland-like food and drink prices.
In fact, beer cost less than it would at a neighborhood bar.
You can visit your festival yourself next year, but in the
meantime, check out festival highlights, learn how to peel
and eat crawfish from a Breaux Bridge native, then create
your own crawfish festival at home with our delectable recipes.
