Muffins A to Z is just that, a cookbook of nothing but muffins.
Simmons receives an A for simplicity. It's simple to read.
It's simple to understand. It's simple to make a variety of
delicious muffins from scratch. There are no techniques that
cannot be mastered by reading the 10 guidelines of "Muffin
Mastery" at the beginning of the book. Further, almost
every ingredient is a staple. There are no exotic ingredients,
and those that you might not have (almond extract or dark
molasses) are easily attainable at any supermarket.
Every recipe I have tried in Muffins A to Z involved only
about 10 minutes prep time and 20-25 minutes bake time. And,
since most muffins freeze well, you can whip up 2 or 3 batches
of muffins over your Sunday coffee and have a couple of weeks
worth of convenient breakfast options on hand.
More than half the recipes have photographs of the finished
product. I prefer pictures of every recipe, but as far as
muffins go, I can imagine what a Jalapeño-Cheddar Corn
Muffin will look like without a photo. The book as a whole
is visually appealing. It's compact. It's colorful. It's cute.
And it would make a sweet gift for a novice or experienced
baker.
