Festival Foods

(back)

If peeling your own crawfish seems like too much work during vacation, don't panic. There are numerous other festival foods available. Without trying to sound like Bubba in Forest Gump, this is what you'll find in the way of crawfish: crawfish étouffée, crawfish gumbo, crawfish pie (right), crawfish bisque, crawfish boudin, crawfish hotdogs, crawfish on a stick, fried crawfish tails, crawfish fettuccini, crawfish pistolettes and more.

If you need to stray from crawfish for a while, there are also shrimp, crab, fish and meat dishes, plus all of your standard fair fare (corndogs, fried onion blossoms, funnel cakes, cotton candy, popcorn) at the carnival. And you'll find plenty of beer, lemonade, and frozen cocktails to wash it all down.

Most festivals—especially those with the amount of music you'll find at the Crawfish Festival—will put you in the poorhouse with their $5 beers and $4 hot dogs. In contrast, the Crawfish Festival was a bargain. The first day, we sipped giant frozen margaritas at $5 at pop (still perfectly reasonable for the super size), but we quickly switched course when we found the $1 Hops beer about 50 yards away. Other than the boiled crawfish ($8, including potato), all of the festival food hovered between $3 - $5.
