Out of the Frying Pan

Greg Steiner of Austin's award-winning Grape Vine Market joins us with his current Top 5 List. Greg will return in the weeks to come with more wine suggestions and advice.

Champagne is an actual region in northern France. Only sparkling wine that comes from this area can be called Champagne. Wine with bubbles from anywhere else in the world is simply called "sparkling wine."
Top 5 Affordable
Champagnes and Sparklings

1. L. Palais ($9) This sparkling comes from the Loire valley in France. It is better than sparkling wines at twice the price. It has crisp, creamy flavors of pear and citrus with a light hint of vanilla spice on the finish.

2. Roedere Estate ($19) Year after year this is the best producer of sparkling wines from California and the Estate is better than many Champagnes that cost twice as much.

3. Geaumont des Crayeres ($26) This true Champagne is reminiscent of what Veuve Clicquot tasted like 5 years ago. Happily, it is also priced the same as Veuve was 5 years ago. This is a great Champagne find.

4. Zardetto Prosecco ($10) Prosecco is a grape the northern Italians use to make their sparkling wines. Wonderfully fresh and pure, this sparkling is perfect for starting off any evening or event.

5. Gruet Blanc de Blanc ($12) Who could imagine that such an amazing sparkling would come from New Mexico? But it does and it tastes great.
