Cookie Dough Rolls

Make a couple of extra batch of dough next time you make cookies. You can keep tightly-wrapped rolls in your freezer and wrap them with parchment and instructions for giving. Even if you're starting from scratch, these are quick, easy and inexpensive--but they'll be much appreciated!

1/2 batch - 1 batch of your favorite cookie dough
waxed paper or plastic wrap
parchment paper
ribbon or string to tie ends
dish towels, wrapping paper, etc. (optional)

Make a batch (or a half batch) your favorite cookie dough. Chill 30 minutes - 1 hour.

Form dough into a log. Each batch of dough makes two rolls. Wrap tightly in waxed paper or plastic wrap. Chill a few hours or freeze.

Cut a piece or parchment paper as wide as the cookie roll + an additional 6 inches. Write name of cookie and baking instructions on one end of the parchment paper. Remove plastic wrap or waxed paper from dough roll and re-wrap with clean wrap, if desired (dough won't stick to parchment paper, so it's really not necessary. Starting with the opposite end, roll up cookies in parchment so that the instructions end up on the outside edge. Gather ends like a candy wrapper and tie with ribbon.

If you like, roll with wrapping paper under parchment so that you can see subtle print through parchment. Alternately, you can first tightly wrap cookie dough in clean waxed paper, plastic wrap, or parchment, then roll in a new dishtowel and tie ends.



If you're wrapping in a dish cloth, wrap dough securely in parchment or other wrapping first.

For visual interest, you might give both thick rolls for large cookies, such as chocolate chip dough (opposite) as well as thinner rolls for more delicate cookies (above). To see a mixture of rolls and wrappings, see The 12 Days of Christmas.
