Everyone has his or her own
favorite method for lighting the grill. As we move
outdoors for the warmer weather, we'll be doing a lot of grilling.
We'll also be testing charcoal-lighting methods, starting
with my current favorite, the newspaper rope and pyramid method.
Sounds fancy, huh?
Well, it's not. But it's quick, and it works pretty well
and cuts down on the starter fluid you need.
Take a folded
sheet of newspaper and twist it lengthwise into a rope. Repeat
with 4 or 5 sheets. Cross them over one another on the bottom
of the grill.
Pile up your
charcoal into a roughly pyramid shape.
Squirt on
a few squirts of starter fluid and let it soak in for a few
minutes.
Light the
newspaper ropes, starting with the back of the pile and working
forward (duh, but I've spaced out and started in front before).
The newspaper
will catch fire immediately and quickly spread to light the
coals.
When initial
fire goes down a bit and the coals are glowing, spread them
out more evenly, using a long spatula or tongs.
